Responsible Citizens
Lesson Plan: Responsible Citizens Learning Objectives: Students will define what it means to be a responsible citizen. Students will identify key responsibilities of citizens in their community, nation, and globally. Students will reflect on how they can actively contribute to their community. Introduction (10 minutes): Begin with a class discussion: "What does being a responsible citizen mean to you?" Present examples of citizenship at different levels: home, school, community, nation, and world. Highlight the importance of participation, responsibility, and respect in a functioning society. Main Lesson (15-20 minutes): Key Responsibilities of a Citizen: Obeying laws and respecting others’ rights. Participating in community service or volunteering. Voting and staying informed about social issues. Respecting diversity and promoting inclusion. Environmental stewardship (taking care of shared spaces, sustainability efforts). Examples of Responsible Citizenship: Share a few inspiring real-life examples—people who made a difference through civic actions (local or global). Activities (15-20 minutes): Group Brainstorm: My Role as a Responsible Citizen: In small groups, students brainstorm how they can be responsible citizens at school, at home, and in their community. Each group shares one idea. "Citizen Action Pledge" Activity: Each student writes a short personal pledge describing one action they will take to be a responsible citizen (e.g., recycling more, helping neighbors, being kind online). Role-Play Scenarios: Students role-play scenarios (e.g., helping a new student, addressing a community issue) to practice responsible behavior. Conclusion (5 minutes): Reflect on why responsible citizenship matters for a community and nation. Ask students to share how they will apply what they learned in their daily lives. Homework: Write a short reflection on a responsible citizen in your life (family member, public figure, etc.) and explain what makes them a role model.

Responsible Citizens

Youth play an important role in building a peaceful, responsible, and successful society. In Bhutan, young people are future leaders who can contribute positively to their communities and nation through good behavior, education, and active participation in social activities.

Responsible youth respect their parents, teachers, elders, and friends. They follow school rules, obey laws, and promote kindness, honesty, and compassion in daily life. By helping others and working together, young people strengthen community harmony and unity.

Youth can also contribute by protecting the environment. In Bhutan, environmental conservation is very important, and young people can help by planting trees, reducing waste, keeping surroundings clean, and spreading awareness about environmental protection.

Another important responsibility of youth is using technology and social media wisely. Responsible digital citizenship means using the internet respectfully, avoiding cyberbullying, and sharing positive and truthful information online.

Young people can also participate in community service, volunteering programs, cultural events, and awareness campaigns. These activities help develop leadership skills, teamwork, and social responsibility.

By becoming responsible citizens, Bhutanese youth can help preserve the country’s culture, traditions, and values while contributing to national development and Gross National Happiness (GNH).
